Complement Inhibition

...Complement is thought to play a key role in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) pathology...

Complement is a system of serum proteins that comprises an important effector arm of the innate immune system and is associated with macrophage activation and inflammation. If Complement activation is excessive or sustained over long periods of time, Complement can have pathological consequences. Complement is thought to play a key role in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) pathology, based on the presence of Complement proteins in drusen (abnormal deposits found in the eye that are a characteristic feature of AMD) and on a rapidly expanding series of genetic studies documenting mutations within certain Complement proteins as a major risk factor for developing both the wet and dry forms of AMD.

Potentia is developing therapeutic agents, such as Complement inhibitors, that will take advantage of these findings to target the early stages of AMD and prevent vision loss.
